Stretch film for machines, 500 mm wide, 23 micron thickness

This film is machine stretch film for a pallet wrapping machine: 500 mm wide, 23 microns in thickness, supplied with 16 kg per roll per roll.

Each 16 kg roll is made from LLDPE, a film that extends to several times its original length and then contracts. The security of the pallet comes from the tension applied by the machine, rather than the film’s thickness.

500 mm is the standard width for pallet wrappers, and our SMARTWRAP X2 models use this size on a 76 mm internal core diameter with pre-stretch capability up to 250%.

There are two types available: Standard A and PRESTRETCH POWER. The right choice depends on whether your machine’s carriage pre-stretches the film. Let us know your machine model and we will confirm compatibility.

Where machine stretch film 500 mm / 23 micron is used

This film is commonly used in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing and distribution settings where palletised items need to be stabilised for storage or onward movement. It is ideal for securing cartons, sacks, barrels and assorted goods on pallets. Typical customers include food and drink manufacturers, chemical and pharmaceutical storage facilities, suppliers of building materials, and logistics service providers.

The film is dispensed using automatic or semi-automatic pallet wrappers on packing lines or in dispatch zones. It integrates into processes where pallets are wrapped prior to being stored, loaded onto lorries, or transferred for further distribution.

Technical details

Purpose of the film

• Pallets remain secure during transport. Properly wrapped loads stay stable in transit, which is more cost-effective than using extra film.
• Protects against dust and moisture. A wrapped pallet can be left in a yard or cross-dock without exposing goods to the elements.
• The machine optimises film usage. Film thickness does not equal strength: a well-adjusted machine stretches the film efficiently, reducing the amount used per pallet compared to thicker, loosely applied film.
• 23 microns: the practical standard. Sufficiently robust for typical palletised loads, yet thin enough for the machine to stretch without tearing.
• 16 kg per roll. Supplied as a full machine roll, minimising the need to reload during order preparation.
• Universal 500 mm width. The industry standard width, ensuring compatibility with your current and future pallet wrappers.

Instructions for use

1. Place the roll onto the film carriage of the pallet wrapper and feed the film to the load.
2. Secure the film’s end at the base of the pallet, or allow the machine to hold it in place.
3. Begin the wrapping cycle: the turntable rotates, the carriage moves vertically, and the film is applied around the load.
4. Allow the machine to complete several rotations at the base to secure the load to the pallet.
5. At the end of the cycle, cut the film and press the end onto the wrapped load.

Storage and handling advice

• Stretch first, then apply tension. Adjust the carriage to stretch the film to the required length before setting the tension. Excessive tension on unstretched film may cause tearing; insufficient tension may allow the load to shift.
• Secure the base. The main holding force comes from the wraps that fasten the load to the pallet. Count these turns rather than estimating.
• Sharp edges. Film is most likely to tear at a corner rather than across the middle. Use edge protectors for loads with pronounced corners.
• Keep rolls free from debris. Dirt or grit on the roll’s edge can start a tear that will run across the film when stretched.
• Store indoors. Keep dry, away from sunlight, and off cold floors. Exposure to sunlight reduces both cling and stretch properties.
• Not intended for prolonged outdoor use. Standard film offers only limited protection from UV. For extended outdoor storage, choose a UV-stabilised film.

• Standard or POWER option. Both options are available here. The appropriate choice depends on your pallet wrapper’s film carriage and the level of pre-stretch it provides.
• The type of load. 23 micron film is suitable for most standard palletised loads. If your loads are particularly heavy, have sharp edges or are unstable, please inform us so we can advise on the appropriate thickness.
• Your usage requirements. Each roll contains 16 kg of film. Calculate the kilograms of film your pallet wrapper uses per pallet, as this figure determines your actual cost, rather than the price per roll.
• Where your pallets are stored. This film is suitable for use under cover. If pallets are stored outdoors for extended periods, please request a UV-stabilised film.
